Economics Major and Minor
in the College of Arts and Sciences

Economics Major

As of Summer 1995, a major requires a total of 33 credit hours in economics, made up of 15 hours of required courses (Econ 105 [formerly 200], 106 [formerly 201], 300, 303 and 309) and 18 hours of electives; up to 3 hours of elective credit may be lower division.  Most students pursuing their degrees within the College of Arts and Sciences before Summer 1995 will need only 15 hours of elective credits: please see your Arts and Sciences advisor or an undergraduate advisor in the Economics Department to verify which requirements apply to you.  Students are encouraged to discuss the selection of electives with the undergraduate advisor, or any professor, in the Economics Department.  Majors, particularly those interested in going on to graduate school, are encouraged to complete one semester of calculus (Math 162 or 180).

Students with a 3.2 GPA or better in economics are invited to apply to the departmental honors program.  See the undergraduate advisor (me) for more details.  My advice for those interested in honors: consider the opportunity cost of the time and effort required to complete the honors requirement, and compare the marginal benefits of a degree with honors with the marginal benefit of higher grades earned in regular courses.

Economics Minor A minor requires a total of 18 credit hours in economics, consisting of 9 hours of required core courses (Econ 105 [formerly 200], 106 [formerly 201], and either 300 or 303) and 9 hours of electives, 3 hours of which may be lower division.
